White Hats Outmaneuver Coldcard Hackers in 52-Bitcoin Rescue Operation
A group of security experts has successfully transferred Bitcoin rescued from wallets exposed by a Coldcard vulnerability to a trust set up to return the funds to their victims.
The transfer, totaling 52.37 Bitcoin, was made to an address controlled by Wyoming-based Crypto Recovery Trust, as reported by Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy Digital, in an X post on Monday.
This move follows a previous report that around 50 Bitcoin were rescued at the end of July due to the Coldcard entropy flaw. The total amount associated with the vulnerability is estimated to be around 1,830 BTC across 9,162 addresses.
The Crypto Recovery Trust has set up a website where potential victims can enter their wallet addresses to determine whether the trust controls their funds. Thorn stated that about 40% of the Bitcoin associated with the second wave was swept by white hats to protect victims' funds.
