Wind Farms + Bitcoin Mining = Big Revenue Boost
A new study from Ireland suggests that pairing wind farms with Bitcoin mining operations could significantly boost revenue for operators.
The researchers, based at Technological University of the Shannon, found that a 20 MW Bitcoin mining facility installed alongside a 100 MW wind farm could utilize up to 83% of otherwise curtailed power, increasing combined revenue by approximately 32% compared to wind generation alone.
Curtailment occurs when wind farms are instructed to reduce output due to grid constraints or low demand, resulting in wasted energy and lost revenue. By co-locating mining rigs at wind farms, operators can turn this otherwise lost energy into a profitable activity, improving the financial viability of renewable projects.
