Winklevoss Targets Zcash ETF Boom After 700% Price Surge
Zcash, once a niche privacy cryptocurrency, has seen a remarkable surge, with its price increasing by approximately 741% over the past year. This surge has caught the attention of institutional investors, leading to the filing of a second U.S. spot ETF for Zcash. Cameron Winklevoss's Winklevoss Asset Services has filed with the SEC for the Winklevoss Zcash ETF, which would trade on Nasdaq under the ticker WINK.
The first U.S. spot Zcash ETF, Grayscale’s ZCSH, began trading on August 25 and has quickly amassed a significant position. As of September 23, ZCSH held 644,878 ZEC worth $977.4 million, with cumulative net primary-market inflows reaching $306.1 million. This established market presents both an opportunity and a challenge for the Winklevoss product, which proposes a much lower annual sponsor fee of 0.25% compared to ZCSH’s 2.5%.
Despite the initial enthusiasm, ZCSH has seen some cooling in investor interest, with outflows totaling $81.2 million between September 28 and October 5. This shift underscores the importance of the next phase in the Zcash ETF market, where WINK will need to compete not only for new investments but also for investors already exposed through ZCSH.
Zcash’s appeal lies in its privacy-preserving transactions, using zero-knowledge technology to shield transaction information. This unique feature sets it apart from other cryptocurrencies and aligns with the growing demand for privacy-focused digital assets. The broader U.S. crypto ETF market has also expanded beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum, with spot products now providing exposure to a variety of alternative cryptocurrencies.
The filing marks a notable return for the Winklevoss name in the crypto ETF market. Nearly a decade after the SEC rejected their proposal for the Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust, the brothers are back with a focus on a more unconventional target. The proposed WINK ETF would hold ZEC directly and potentially receive up to $100 million of investment interest from affiliates of Winklevoss Capital.
