Winklevoss Twins Revive ETF Ambitions with Zcash Proposal
The Winklevoss twins, Cameron and Tyler, have filed for a Zcash ETF nearly 13 years after their historic first bid for a Bitcoin ETF. The new product, named the Winklevoss Zcash ETF, was registered via Form S-1 submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The ETF aims to provide investors with direct exposure to Zcash (ZEC), a privacy-focused cryptocurrency, through a passive investment instrument.
The ETF, if approved, will be listed on the Nasdaq under the ticker WINK. The ZEC holdings will be securely stored by Gemini Trust Company, a cryptocurrency custodian co-founded by the Winklevoss twins and regulated by the New York State Department of Financial Services. The fund will not use leverage or derivatives, focusing solely on owning ZEC to mirror its price movements.
Winklevoss Capital Fund has indicated interest in purchasing up to $100 million worth of shares, though this is not a binding commitment. The filing comes shortly after Tyler Winklevoss publicly expressed enthusiasm for Zcash, comparing the current resurgence of interest in the cryptocurrency to the excitement seen in 2019.
