Wisconsin Lawmakers Investigate Cryptocurrency Regulations Amid Rising Scam Losses
A bipartisan Wisconsin legislative committee met at the Capitol to discuss potential regulations for the growing cryptocurrency industry.
The meeting was prompted by a surge in cryptocurrency scams, particularly among senior citizens. According to the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions, residents over 60 lost $46 million to such scams in 2025.
Attorney Robin Jacobs with the Department of Financial Institutions expressed concern about the increasing use of cryptocurrency for scamming purposes due to its permanent, fast, and anonymous transactions.
Some common investment scams include 'pig butchering' schemes, where victims are lured into financial traps through fake romantic relationships, and phishing scams involving bogus websites.
