Wisconsin Passes Law to Regulate Crypto ATMs Amid Scam Epidemic
Crypto ATM scams have plagued Wisconsin residents in recent years, with hundreds of thousands of dollars extracted from victims. A new law regulating crypto ATMs has been enacted, which restricts daily transactions to $1,000, requires receipts after each transaction, mandates consumer identification, and offers refunds to victims.
The legislation was passed in response to the growing problem of crypto ATM scams, which have caused headaches for local law enforcement agencies and financial damage to victims. Sen. Jesse James, R-Thorp, who co-authored the bill, noted that people need to be educated on how these scams work and that the new law will help.
Crypto ATMs are machines that convert cash into digital currency, with at least 28,000 locations in the U.S. and around 700 in Wisconsin. However, they have been used by scammers to extract money from victims through manipulative processes. In some cases, scammers pose as law enforcement or bank officials to convince victims to withdraw cash, which is then deposited into a crypto ATM.
The new law has already shown results, with a decrease in scam reports according to law enforcement officials and the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions. While some argue that the restrictions do not go far enough, others believe it is a step in the right direction to protect consumers from these types of scams.
