Witt Warns Failed Vote Could Delay CLARITY Act Passage
White House crypto adviser Patrick Witt has expressed optimism about the upcoming September 15 procedural vote on the CLARITY Act, but warns that a failed vote could delay the bill's passage. Witt expects strong Republican support for the measure, with around 53 out of 100 senators backing it.
The legislation aims to provide clarity on crypto regulations and has been under negotiation since June. However, several issues remain unresolved, including ethics provisions, stablecoin rewards, and law-enforcement measures. Witt emphasized that lawmakers should allow the bill to advance while continuing negotiations over these provisions.
Witt also noted that the timing of another attempt at passing the CLARITY Act could depend on the 2026 midterm elections and the resulting balance of power in Congress. If the vote fails, it could make future attempts more difficult.
