World Cup Spikes Blockchain Prediction Markets to $20 Billion
The 2026 FIFA World Cup drove significant activity in blockchain-based prediction markets and digital collectibles, according to Chainalysis. The analytics firm estimated that $20 billion in blockchain-linked prediction market volume was tied to the tournament, with about $5.7 billion wagered across the five-week event window. This represents a huge scale of engagement, with 63% of all prediction market trading during this period coming from World Cup markets.
Chainalysis noted that over 400,000 wallets participated in blockchain betting, with the United States and China leading in attributable volume. Illicit exposure appears limited, with fewer than 1% of participating wallets having ties to illicit actors. However, Chainalysis detected roughly $5.4 million in flows from sanctioned and other illicit sources.
Fan engagement extended beyond betting, with around $24 million in FIFA Collect NFT trades and over 100,000 match tickets distributed through the platform. The low level of illicit exposure is attributed to identity verification requirements implemented by the platform.
