World Liberty Financial Secures Preliminary Approval Amid Ongoing Controversy

Share

World Liberty Financial has secured preliminary approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency for its federal banking charter. To meet regulatory requirements, Eric Trump and other key executives have signed 'passivity commitments' to avoid management decisions. This move is seen as a gesture of goodwill but raises questions given World Liberty's ongoing legal issues.

The company has been embroiled in controversy, including a lawsuit filed by Tron founder Justin Sun alleging that World Liberty froze his tokens and blocked his voting rights. The case remains before a federal court. Additionally, an investigation revealed that World Liberty had deposited 5 billion of its own WLFI tokens on the Dolomite lending platform as collateral to borrow about $75 million in stablecoins.

The regulatory climate has shifted in favor of crypto companies seeking banking charters, with similar approvals granted to Ripple, Paxos, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Coinbase. However, this approval does little to alleviate concerns surrounding World Liberty's management and financial practices.
