XRP Derivatives Leverage Spikes as Spot Activity Collapses
XRP is sitting at a precarious price point as its derivatives market sees increasing leverage while spot activity plummets. The token's price has been hovering around $0.99, near the lower end of its six-month trading range.
Data shows a divergence between the derivatives and spot markets, with rising leverage in the former and collapsing exchange flows in the latter. This situation makes XRP more sensitive to sudden price moves, as small orders can have a larger impact on price action when there is less activity in the spot market to support price discovery.
Binance data reveals that XRP inflows and outflows have fallen 95% to 98% below their 90-day baselines, indicating significantly reduced capital movement through one of the market's main trading venues. Trading volume has also weakened, dropping 17% week-over-week.
While spot activity is fading, traders continue to increase their derivatives exposure, with XRP open interest rising from 366 million on August 4 to 461 million on August 16, a 10% increase from the 30-day baseline. The leverage ratio has also increased, from 0.141 to 0.176 during the same period.
