XRP Hangs in Balance as CLARITY Act Vote Looms
The XRP community is eagerly anticipating the September 15 vote on the CLARITY Act, a bill that could establish a comprehensive framework for cryptocurrency regulation. The legislation would divide responsibility between the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), providing clarity for digital assets like XRP.
In March, the SEC identified XRP as a digital commodity, alongside other major cryptocurrencies such as BTC and ETH. If the CLARITY Act becomes law, it would establish a formal regulatory regime for digital commodity exchanges, brokers, and dealers, giving the CFTC an expanded role in overseeing spot markets.
Ripple's Chief Legal Officer described September 15 as a 'bellwether' for whether comprehensive crypto legislation can continue advancing through Congress. The XRP community is counting on the vote to provide durability and permanence for XRP's regulatory status, which could be subject to change by future administrations.
However, there are concerns that the bill may not pass, with the odds declining from over 70% to roughly 30% in recent months. The National Sheriffs' Association has dropped its opposition, but a new report suggests that an unresolved ethics dispute may hinder the bill's progress.
