XRP Ledger Advances Smart Escrow Features with Ninth Devnet Release
The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is making significant progress toward launching its programmable escrow features. The ninth release of the Smart Escrow Devnet has been deployed, marking a major step forward. Mayukha Vadari, a senior software engineer at RippleX and a key author of the Smart Escrows proposal, described this release as a "big step toward launch." She noted that the team is still reviewing and testing the framework before the final release.
This latest release includes substantial under-the-hood changes, particularly the full migration of the WebAssembly virtual machine integration from C++ to Rust. Vadari explained that this new architecture simplifies gas accounting, error handling, and checks, while also improving performance by 30%, 50% for every host function call. Additionally, the developers updated the names of host functions, ledger fields, transaction engine result codes, and the execution entry point to production-ready names.
Smart Escrows will introduce programmability to the XRPL, allowing users to add small WebAssembly programs to escrows. These programs can determine whether an escrow should be completed, enabling more complex release conditions. Potential use cases include approvals from a notary, compliance holds, real estate deals, auctions, and other conditional arrangements. Assets locked in a Smart Escrow can only be released if specific conditions, such as approvals, compliance checks, or external data from an oracle, are met.
