XRP Ledger Advances Smart Escrow with Ninth Devnet Release
The $XRP Ledger (XRPL) is advancing toward the launch of its programmable escrow features with the deployment of the ninth release of the Smart Escrow Devnet. Mayukha Vadari, a senior software engineer at RippleX and a key author of the Smart Escrows proposal, called it a "big step toward launch." The team is still reviewing and testing the framework before its official release.
The ninth release includes significant technical upgrades, such as a full migration of the WebAssembly virtual machine integration from C++ to Rust. This change improves performance by 30%, 50% for every host function call and introduces a unified system for gas accounting, error handling, and checks. Additionally, the developers updated various names and entry points to production-ready standards.
Smart Escrow introduces programmable conditions to the XRPL's existing escrow functionality. Users can now attach a small WebAssembly program to an escrow, allowing for more complex release conditions. Potential use cases include approvals from a notary, compliance checks, real estate deals, auctions, and other conditional agreements. Assets can only be released if specific criteria, such as approvals or external data via oracles, are met.
Those testing the Smart Escrow technology will need to update their configurations to align with the new Devnet. Vadari emphasized that "programmability on the XRPL keeps moving," highlighting the ongoing progress in expanding the ledger's capabilities.
