XRP Ledger Advances Smart Escrow with Rust-Based Performance Boost
The XRP Ledger is moving closer to full programmability with the release of the ninth Smart Escrow Devnet. This update marks a significant step toward the feature's launch, according to RippleX senior software engineer Mayukha Vadari. Developers have transitioned the WebAssembly integration from C++ to Rust, resulting in a 30%, 50% performance boost for each host function call. The change also streamlines gas accounting, error handling, and checks through a single entry point.
Smart Escrow introduces programmable conditions for locked XRP or other assets, expanding beyond standard escrow capabilities. Potential applications include compliance checks, notary approvals, auctions, real estate transactions, and oracle-based transactions. Developers can now create conditional transactions without altering the basic escrow process.
The update includes renaming host functions, ledger fields, transaction result codes, and the execution entry point to better match production use. While testing continues, no mainnet launch date has been announced. The focus remains on software review, Devnet testing, and ensuring the stability of the Rust-based design.
Other XRP ecosystem projects, such as the Evernorth XRP treasury plan, highlight ongoing activity around infrastructure and institutional products. Smart Escrow aims to enhance transaction rules rather than market access, offering new possibilities for conditional transfers and multi-requirement arrangements.
