XRP Ledger Bolsters AI Payments with Mastercard's Verifiable Intent Integration
The XRP Ledger is taking AI payments to the next level by integrating Mastercard's Verifiable Intent (VI) standard. This allows developers to attach verifiable proof of authorization to AI-initiated payments, providing an extra layer of security before funds move on-chain.
According to t54, the company behind the XRPL x402 Facilitator, the integration enables cryptographic authorization and pre-settlement risk checks for autonomous blockchain transactions. This means that each transaction can now prove who approved it, the spending limits attached to it, and the exact purchase it is authorized to complete.
The system uses a three-tier chain of Selective Disclosure JSON Web Token (SD-JWT) credentials, L1, L2, and L3, to verify critical elements such as who authorized the payment, what limits or conditions apply, and which transaction is being approved. This gives AI agents machine-verifiable authorization instead of relying solely on wallet ownership.
The integration further strengthens XRPL's role in the emerging agentic economy, which is expected to grow significantly with the adoption of x402 and AI-driven activity on the network.
