XRP Ledger Hits 8 Million Accounts: Top 1% Threshold Dropped by 0.3%

The XRP Ledger has quietly reached 8 million funded accounts in August this year. One figure that gets thrown around is the top 1% threshold, which stands at 44,771 XRP.

This figure isn't fixed and changes every day due to various factors, such as new low-balance accounts being added to the ledger faster than XRP accumulates at the top.

The rich list report breaks down how this threshold is computed, what the full balance distribution looks like underneath it, and where the numbers mislead if taken at face value. The analysis also covers why every account is a discrete ledger object with an explicit balance, reserve requirement, and escrow lock, which makes the rich-list math more tractable but also easier to get wrong.

The report notes that the ranking should include escrow, not just spendable balance, as an account can lock XRP into an 'Escrow ledger' object that releases on a time condition or crypto-condition. This is crucial because several of the largest Ripple-linked wallets hold only a few hundred thousand XRP spendable against billions sitting in escrow.

The base reserve was cut from 10 XRP to 1 XRP in December 2024, which led to account growth since then being largely driven by this change rather than organic adoption. Therefore, it's essential to keep this in mind when reading population growth as a bullish signal on its own.
