$XRP Ledger Protocol Developer Nik Bougalis Returns to Modernize Core

Nik Bougalis, a veteran of Ripple and one of the developers of key $XRP Ledger protocols, has returned to work on the project's source code. His return was welcomed by David Schwartz, co-creator of the blockchain, who tweeted that he would only come back from his break if he could work alongside Bougalis again. Bougalis marked his return with a pull request titled 'I'm back, baby', where he aims to modernize low-level utility types in the rippled repository.

The changes proposed by Bougalis aim to improve security and optimize performance. He is refactoring the BaseUInt data type to use 64-bit elements, removing unsafe raw pointers and unchecked runtime constructors, which will help protect the network from failures under critical loads. This is a deep, low-level modernization of the network's core.

Bougalis left Ripple in 2022 but has since joined RippleX as head of engineering H. Ayo Akinyele confirmed that Bougalis has been brought in to tackle ambitious next-generation technology challenges, which coincide with sweeping structural changes across the industry.
