XRP Ledger Sees Rapid Growth in Agent Payments, Nears 10 Million Transactions
The XRP Ledger has seen a rapid increase in agent payments, reaching nearly 4 million transactions using the x402 payment standard. This is according to data tracked by Bitget and CoinoTag, with a growth rate of over 900,000 payments in just under a week.
Ayo Akinyele, RippleX's head of engineering, has predicted that the network will surpass 10 million agentic transactions soon, potentially reaching 100 million within a couple of years. The x402 protocol allows AI agents to pay each other directly for services such as API calls and compute rentals.
The x402 facilitator settles these transactions on-chain, using an HTTP status code that has been dormant since the 1990s. This process enables micropayments without human approval, with transactions finalizing in three to five seconds and fees running a fraction of a cent.
