XRP Ledger Transitions to Stablecoin Settlement and Programmable Asset System
The XRP Ledger has evolved beyond its original purpose of facilitating quick value transfers. With three significant developments, it's transitioning into a platform for stablecoin settlement, programmable assets, and on-chain credit.
Ripple USD (RLUSD) has grown to $2.4 billion in circulation, backed by approximately $2.52 billion in reserve assets as of September 3rd. This token gives the XRP Ledger a native dollar market, allowing institutions to hold and settle value without being exposed to XRP price volatility.
FXRP, another development, extends this idea further. Approximately 145.2 million FXRP has been minted, with 130 million deployed in DeFi applications. Importantly, the XRP backing remains on XRPL while Flare's system verifies and manages the representation, making XRP programmable without moving the underlying asset.
The Lending Protocol, a key aspect of this shift, is being expanded through xrpld release 3.4.0. This introduces fixed-term, uncollateralized lending funded through Single Asset Vaults, with borrower underwriting handled off-chain. While native lending isn't yet fully active, it has the potential to bring credit directly onto XRPL.
