XRP Ledger Upgrade Allows Account Role-Splitting for Enhanced Security
The XRP Ledger is set to undergo an upgrade called PermissionDelegationV1_1, which will allow for accounts to be split into different roles. This upgrade has entered a 14-day activation countdown, starting on September 21, and needs the support of at least 28 out of 35 trusted validation nodes. If this threshold is met, the upgrade could activate as early as October 5 at 11:18 UTC.
The new feature will enable accounts to be split into different roles, such as an operational account that can make payments but not change keys or authorize others. Each trustee can have up to 10 permissions, and the main account can modify or revoke them at any time. This is the second attempt by the network to introduce this functionality.
Earlier versions of the feature had a vulnerability that allowed attackers to drain an account's XRP balance through repeated high-fee transactions. The bug was reported by a community tester on September 15, 2025, and led to the original version being abandoned.
