XRP Ledger Upgrade Bundles 8 Transactions, Reduces Partial Transaction Risk
The XRP Ledger is set to receive a significant upgrade on October 9, which will bundle eight transactions into one submission. This change, known as XLS-56, is designed to reduce the risk of partial transactions, where only part of a trade completes. The upgrade implements the standard for grouped execution, corrected version BatchV1_1, which replaces an earlier implementation due to a security flaw.
According to the XRPL validator support and activation countdown dashboard, 30 of 35 trusted validators backed BatchV1_1 on October 3, equivalent to 85.71%. This means that the upgrade could activate on October 9 if support remains above the required threshold.
The new feature allows buyers and sellers to exchange payment for digital assets in a single, conditional trade. If either step fails, neither transfer takes effect. The specification permits operations involving one account or multiple accounts, allowing participants to coordinate an exchange without completing one side independently.
The upgrade also includes a separate security fix, fixBatchV1_2, which was released on September 25 to address security-sensitive issues. If it activates, servers running older software will become unable to stay synchronized with the network.
Ripple has pursued infrastructure for issuing and trading tokenized assets, including investments in Zilo and Licuido announced in August. The security amendment's projected activation is October 9 at approximately 10:12 a.m. EDT, followed by BatchV1_1 around 10:46 a.m. EDT, provided each retains the required validator majority.
