XRP Ledger Upgrades Target Institutional Adoption
The XRP Ledger is undergoing significant upgrades in 2026, moving beyond payments to institution-friendly tokenization, credit, and programmable finance. These changes aim to address weaknesses that previously limited institutional DeFi and real-world asset adoption of the XRP blockchain.
One key upgrade is Multi-Purpose Tokens (MPTs), which can define maximum supply, transfer fees, authorization requirements, and more. MPTs have been live on XRPL since October 2025 and are integrating with escrows, permissioned domains, vaults, and lending. Their potential uses include stablecoins, tokenized deposits, bonds, fund shares, loyalty points, commodities, and regulated real-world assets.
Another significant upgrade is the introduction of Permissioned Domains and DEXes, which create controlled trading environments inside the public XRP Ledger. This allows institutions to trade on-chain with access controls, providing a clear institutional use case for banks, stablecoin issuers, and asset managers.
