XRP vs Algorand: Quantum Security Showdown Heats Up

Ripple's XRP Ledger (XRPL) is taking a broader approach to quantum security compared to its competitor Algorand, which has already deployed post-quantum signatures on its mainnet. However, Algorand's current consensus system still relies partly on cryptography that could be vulnerable to a powerful quantum computer.

Algorand began using Falcon post-quantum signatures in State Proofs in 2022 and deployed native Falcon-based post-quantum accounts on mainnet in August 2026. However, its Verifiable Random Function (VRF) used in consensus committee selection is still based on elliptic-curve cryptography, which is not quantum-resistant.

XRPL, on the other hand, is working with Project Eleven to assess and address potential vulnerabilities across multiple layers of the network, including validators, custody, wallets, and networking. The plan aims to achieve full post-quantum readiness by 2028, targeting broader quantum resilience than Algorand's current deployment.

Ripple's native key rotation feature could make future migration easier on XRPL compared to other networks, where assets must be manually transferred. Additionally, around 300,000 XRPL accounts holding approximately 2.4 billion XRP have not exposed their public keys, reducing one category of future quantum risk.

The article emphasizes that achieving quantum readiness is a complex task requiring the migration of multiple layers, including wallets, validator signatures, consensus, custody, and cryptographic primitives. Algorand's lead in deployment does not necessarily mean it has completed the process, as it still needs to address its VRF vulnerability.
