XRP vs. SWIFT: Ripple's Realistic Path to Disrupting Global Payments
Ripple's XRP faces challenges in disrupting global payments dominated by SWIFT. The messaging network has over 11,500 institutions connected across 200 countries and handles more than 53 million messages per day.
SWIFT is not just a messaging platform; it also includes a compliance infrastructure that creates a significant barrier to entry for any competitor. This includes a KYC Registry with almost 6,000 financial institutions and over 60 central banks, as well as Compliance Analytics covering more than half of all SWIFT traffic.
Ripple's On-Demand Liquidity handled around $15 billion in 2024, which is only about 0.01% of global cross-border flows. While Ripple targets correspondent banking relationships, it has not yet achieved systemic scale.
