XRPL Memo Expansion Sparks Decentralization Fears
A proposed XRP Ledger (XRPL) change has sparked concerns about its potential impact on decentralization. The proposal aims to increase the XRPL Memo field from 1 KB to approximately 1.3 MB, allowing users to attach larger files directly to transactions.
Supporters argue that users should have the option to store content on-chain, provided they are willing to pay the associated fees.
However, former Ripple developer relations director Matt Hamilton strongly criticized the proposal, calling it 'a really bad idea.'
Hamilton's concern is that allowing larger files to be embedded in transactions could cause the ledger's data requirements to grow significantly faster than its current design. This could lead to increased hardware and storage demands for validators and node operators, making it harder for smaller or independent participants to maintain nodes.
