XRP, the cryptocurrency developed by Ripple Labs, has seen a significant decline from its peak. The token, designed for fast and low-cost cross-border payments, hit a lifetime high of $3.65 in July 2025 but has since dropped approximately 64%. As of this writing, XRP is down more than 60% from its high and has been losing ground to Bitcoin recently.
The broader cryptocurrency market is cyclical, and while a rising tide typically lifts all boats, XRP has been underperforming. Bitcoin's token price is down roughly 8% year-to-date, while XRP's token price is down roughly 30% over the same period. Over the last three months, XRP has only risen 20%, compared to Bitcoin's 27% increase.
XRP's core value proposition is under threat from the proliferation of stablecoins, which offer lower volatility and are pegged to $1. This could make stablecoins more popular for payments, potentially pressuring XRP's future adoption. Ripple Labs may need to find other use cases for XRP within its ecosystem to spur big valuation gains for the token.
Given the uncertainty on that front, it's unlikely that buying XRP as an investment will set you up for life. The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team did not include XRP in their list of the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now, suggesting caution before investing in the token.
