Yen Surge Sparks Carry Trade Unwind Fears
The Japanese yen surged by 2% against the US dollar in a sharp move that has raised concerns about the unwind of the carry trade, which has significant implications for crypto markets.
The rally comes amid speculation that Japan's Ministry of Finance may have intervened directly or is preparing to do so. The ministry has been vocal about its willingness to act and has deployed record interventions totaling approximately 11.73 trillion yen ($73 billion) in April and May 2026 alone to arrest the currency's slide.
The carry trade, which involves borrowing cheap Japanese capital to invest in higher-yielding assets such as stocks, bonds, and cryptocurrencies, may be on shaky ground. The Bank of Japan raised its policy rate to around 1% in June 2026, making it more expensive for investors to borrow yen.
A strengthening yen poses a double threat to carry trade investors: their funding currency becomes more expensive, and the positions they funded with it may be losing value simultaneously. Historical data suggests that BOJ rate hikes have corresponded with significant crypto drawdowns, including a 27% average decline in Bitcoin's price.
The current setup carries greater unwind risk than the August 2024 episode when the BOJ's modest rate adjustment triggered a cascade of position closures. Traders should be watching the USD/JPY pair closely as it may signal that the carry trade is entering a full unwind phase, which historically has not been kind to digital assets.
