Zano Halts Blockchain Activity Amid Inflation Bug
Zano, a layer-1 blockchain focused on privacy, faced a critical issue when it discovered an inflation bug tied to Gateway Addresses. The feature was introduced in Hard Fork 6, which activated on mainnet at block 3,833,000 around August 26, 2026.
The team identified the problem on September 25, 2026, and immediately halted all economic activity on both the primary Zano chain and its Confidential Assets layer. A rollback is planned to excise the damage, with users who were affected being made whole in the process.
For a project that relies on scarcity, an inflation bug poses significant risks. Zano operates on a fixed emission schedule with a 1 ZANO block reward, and every transaction fee is burned rather than paid to miners, making the supply deflationary over time.
