Zcash Aims for Faster Block Times with November 5 NU7 Upgrade Target

Zcash developers have set their sights on November 5 for the activation of the NU7 mainnet upgrade. This significant protocol change will reduce Zcash's target block interval from a current 75 seconds to a much faster 25 seconds.

The upgrade, which is part of ZIP 254, aims to improve user experience by allowing transactions to appear on-chain more quickly. However, it also poses challenges for node operators, who must be able to propagate and validate blocks rapidly enough to keep the network synchronized.

To ensure a smooth rollout, developers are staging the upgrade with several checkpoints along the way. Testnet activation is targeted for October 6, followed by a final mainnet decision on October 20. If testnet results indicate any issues, the November 5 target can be delayed.
