Zcash and Monero Surge as Privacy Coins Outperform Bitcoin
Privacy coins like Zcash and Monero are outperforming major cryptocurrencies, with Zcash surging 741% and Monero rising 77% over the past year, while Bitcoin fell 30%. This trend has caught the attention of Santiment, which highlights privacy coins as a defining trend in the crypto market. The surge contrasts sharply with declines of 30% to 49% seen in other major cryptocurrencies over the same period.
Unlike Bitcoin, which records every transaction on a public ledger, privacy coins obscure transaction details through cryptography. Monero automatically hides transaction information, while Zcash allows users to choose between transparent and shielded transactions. This privacy feature appeals to users seeking financial confidentiality but also attracts regulatory scrutiny.
Currently, Zcash trades at $1,367 with a market cap of $23.2 billion, making it the 10th-largest cryptocurrency. Monero is priced at $563 with a market cap of $10.6 billion. Despite their gains, both coins remain below their all-time highs, with Zcash down 57% from its peak and Monero about 30% below its record high.
The rally is primarily driven by Zcash, with its 741% increase far outpacing Monero's 77% rise. However, recent price movements show variability, with Zcash dropping 2.5% over the past week while Monero gained 4.3%. The sustainability of this trend remains uncertain, as regulatory risks and future market conditions could impact privacy coins differently than major cryptocurrencies.
