Zcash Community Backs Bitcoin-Style Halvings and Faster Transactions
The Zcash community has spoken out in favor of faster transactions and Bitcoin-style halvings. Sentiment polls for Network Upgrade 7 closed on September 14 with a resounding 98.9% of ZEC coin holders voting to keep halvings rather than switching to a smoothed issuance model.
This decision carries long-term implications for miner incentives, as each halving cuts the block reward in half and eventually miners need transaction fees alone to justify securing the network. The polls also revealed strong support for cutting the target block interval from 75 seconds down to 25 seconds, a change that would effectively triple the network's transaction throughput without touching ZEC's hard supply cap of 21 million coins.
The advisory polls drew input from both ZEC coin holders and the Zcash Community Advisory Panel (ZCAP), and addressed several proposals bundled under the NU7 umbrella. The community rejected the idea of replacing traditional halving cycles with a smoothed issuance curve, instead opting to stick with halvings roughly every four years.
Shielded transactions now account for 59.3% of recent network activity, representing a significant increase in privacy adoption. Approximately 4.89 million ZEC currently sit in shielded pools, making up about 28.9% of the total circulating supply.
