Zcash is experiencing a significant surge in value, reaching as high as $880 before retreating to around $830. This price increase of over 62% over the past week has put a spotlight on an upcoming governance process that could fundamentally change how new ZEC enters circulation and how quickly the network processes blocks.

The snapshot deadline for holders to qualify for the vote is today, August 24, at block height 3,459,350. Those who hold spendable shielded ZEC in Ironwood at this point will be eligible to participate in the voting process. Voting will begin on August 25 and run until September 14.

The proposals up for consideration include changing the issuance model from periodic halvings to a gradual curve, recycling removed coins through the Network Sustainability Mechanism into future block rewards, and adjusting block times from 75 seconds to 25 seconds under ZIP 218. These changes could have significant implications for Zcash's monetary schedule and network performance.
