Zcash Holders Back Faster Block Times, Existing Halving Schedule
Zcash holders have spoken out in favor of changes to their network's block times and halving schedule, but some rules will remain unchanged. A recent governance vote saw nearly 2.4 million ZEC participate, representing about two-thirds of eligible ZEC. The majority of voting ZEC supported cutting block times from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, which can reduce the wait for transaction confirmations and support faster private payments across the network.
About 99.9% of participating ZEC voted in favor of reducing block times, while around 98.9% supported keeping Zcash's bitcoin-style halving model. This system sees miner rewards from newly issued ZEC fall by half at set intervals instead of declining through a smoother issuance curve.
Zcash holders also voted to delay any reissuance of ZEC gathered through the Network Sustainability Mechanism until February 2031, with 96.6% supporting this decision. The system removes funds from circulation before later returning ZEC through block rewards.
