Zcash Holders Back Faster Transactions and Halving Schedule in Strong Governance Vote
Zcash holders have made their preferences clear in a recent governance vote, backing faster transactions and preserving the network's existing monetary schedule. The vote saw nearly 2.4 million ZEC participate out of roughly 3.6 million eligible, with 99.9% supporting reducing block times from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. This change will complement broader work on private-payment performance and demonstrate that Zcash can use shielded balances to make major technical decisions without exposing holder identities.
Also approved was the existing Bitcoin-style halving schedule, which 98.9% of participating ZEC backed. The vote also addressed how Zcash should handle fees collected through the Network Sustainability Mechanism, with holders backing a delay in reissuing those ZEC until February 2031. This decision keeps the halving schedule intact while allowing recycled fees to accumulate outside circulation for several years.
The governance result gives developers a firm roadmap for the network's next major upgrade, NU7. However, the vote itself does not automatically change the network; the selected features still need to be implemented, tested, and included in the eventual upgrade. The high level of participation exceeded organizers' minimum threshold of 1 million ZEC, with one eligible ZEC equaling one vote.
