Zcash NU7 Upgrade Activates on Testnet with Faster Blocks
Zcash has successfully activated its NU7 upgrade on a public test network, reducing the targeted block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. This upgrade is set to roll out on the mainnet on November 5, pending final reviews.
The NU7 upgrade introduces several key changes, including redirecting 60% of transaction fees to a reserve fund for future mining rewards. It also reduces per-block rewards to maintain Zcash's issuance schedule and disables transactions using the older Sprout privacy system. Users holding funds in Sprout are advised to move them before the mainnet activation to retain access.
The public testnet, which uses coins without monetary value, allows developers and infrastructure operators to test the changes before they affect real ZEC. Both major node programs, Zakura and Zebra, now support the trial, with Zakura releasing its implementation on October 1 and the Zcash Foundation publishing a test version of Zebra the following day.
Developers plan to review the test results and decide on mainnet activation by October 20. The upgrade aims to improve transaction efficiency, potentially shortening the wait time for merchants and exchanges.
