Zcash developers have set their sights on activating the NU7 mainnet upgrade in November. The upgrade, which is currently scheduled to activate on the testnet on October 6, will reduce Zcash's target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds.

The upgrade also includes disabling version 4 transactions and integrating the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM). According to developer Sean Bowe, NU7 will not introduce new transaction formats and should not significantly affect wallets, although full nodes, indexers, and block explorers may require adjustments.

ZEC holders overwhelmingly backed the shorter block interval and preserving the halving schedule, with 98.9% supporting keeping halvings and 99.9% of the Zcash (ZEC)-weighted vote supporting the faster-block proposal.
