Zcash Releases Four Zebra Updates in Two Weeks
The Zcash Foundation recently shared an engineering update covering September 21 to October 5, highlighting four significant Zebra releases. Zebra, the official full node implementation for the Zcash network, was updated with versions 6.4.0, 6.4.1, 6.4.2, and the first release candidate for version 7.0.0. These updates included security fixes, light wallet serving, lower transaction fees, and an emergency fix for a remotely triggerable crash.
Zebra 6.4.0 and 6.4.1 introduced security improvements, experimental light wallet compatibility, and reduced transaction fees. Zebra 6.4.2 was an urgent fix for a crash caused by malformed transactions, discovered through Google's OSS-Fuzz service. The first release candidate for Zebra 7.0.0, known as NU7, activated on the public Testnet on October 4.
The next major milestone is the mainnet launch of the NU7 upgrade, tentatively scheduled for November 5, 2026. Mainnet operators are advised to update their systems before the 6.4.x versions halt in early November. At the time of writing, Zcash (ZEC) was trading at $1,376, up 2.93% in the last 24 hours, with notable accumulation by whales.
