Zcash Shielded Transactions Spike Amid Network Upgrade Plans
Zcash has seen a significant surge in shielded transactions, reaching levels not seen since 2022. Last week, the network processed 62,375 shielded transactions, its highest weekly total this year. This rise comes as ZEC continues to climb, with prices nearing $1,500 and gains of over 193% year-to-date and more than 2,470% over the past year.
The increase in private activity is notable, especially given the planned NU7 network upgrade, which targets a November 5 mainnet launch. The changes include faster block times, which have been supported by the community. Shielded transactions use zero-knowledge proofs to conceal sender and receiver information, making them useful for tracking private network use separately from exchange trading activity.
While some may draw comparisons to the earlier record in 2022, it's essential to note that a spam attack inflated shielded transaction activity at the time. Recent Zcash mining activity has also risen as higher token prices improved mining economics.
