Zcash Shielded Transactions Surge Past 2022 Records Amid Growing Demand for Financial Privacy
Zcash has seen a significant surge in shielded transactions over the past three months. In the week ending September 24th, the network recorded its highest weekly count since 2022 with 62,375 shielded transactions. This marks a substantial acceleration from earlier this year when shielded activity hovered between 8,000 to 12,000 weekly transactions.
The current surge is attributed in part to the growing adoption of shielded pools, which now hold approximately 4.91 million ZEC, roughly 29% of issued supply and around $7.2 billion at current prices. This represents a significant increase from about 11% a year earlier, according to ZecStats.
The increased use of shielded transactions is also driven by the Zodl wallet, which has been routing users into shielded pools by default rather than requiring them to opt in. As a result, shielded transactions comprised 59.3% of all Zcash activity as of April 2026, roughly double the rate from early 2025.
This growth in shielded usage has caught the attention of institutional analysts who argue that Zcash remains undervalued relative to its privacy infrastructure. Grayscale published a research report in March 2026 framing the token as a bet on the growing economic value of financial privacy in an era of expanding artificial intelligence surveillance.
