Zcash Surges 25-Fold as Privacy Coins Outperform Broader Crypto Market
Despite the broader crypto market remaining below its previous peaks, privacy coins have surged significantly over the past year. The sector's combined market capitalization has expanded from $7.1 billion to $33.6 billion since October 2025, with Zcash leading the rally after climbing more than 25-fold.
Zcash now accounts for over 60% of the sector's capitalization and has moved from being the 82nd largest crypto asset by market value to the 10th-largest overall. The token's latest acceleration has been driven by institutional access, with Grayscale's Zcash Trust bringing in over $34 million in net inflows during its first two weeks on NYSE Arca.
The flexibility of Zcash's structure allows for both transparent and shielded transactions, making it an attractive option for investors seeking regulated exposure to the fast-rising token. However, the sector still carries significant risks, including high leverage and Europe's upcoming anti-money laundering regulations, which will prohibit service providers from maintaining accounts that enable transaction anonymization.
While the surge in privacy coins is being powered by real demand and institutional products, shielded adoption will need to remain strong for the rally to endure. The sector's concentration of Zcash also leaves it vulnerable to violent price movements if leverage unwinds.
