Zcash Surges Past $1,000 Amid Growing Institutional Interest
Zcash (ZEC) has broken through the $1,000 barrier, marking an impressive recovery from its June sell-off. The cryptocurrency's price surged past $1,010 on September 4, with a daily rise of about 6%.
The rally is attributed to multiple drivers, rather than a single catalyst. Institutional interest has grown significantly, with Grayscale's efforts to convert its Zcash vehicle into a spot ETF contributing to the breakout in August. Concurrently, futures activity surged, with open interest reaching $1.76 billion and 24-hour futures volume reaching roughly $9.54 billion on August 22.
Speculative elements are still present, with more than $34 million in short positions allegedly liquidated as ZEC broke $1,000, resulting in forced buying and quickening the breakout.
Fundamental factors also support demand for Zcash, including a growing shielded supply of roughly 4.86 million ZEC, indicating increased use of its privacy infrastructure. The ongoing NU7 governance process has refocused attention on the network's advancement, with voting currently taking place among coinholders until September 14.
However, technically, ZEC is getting overextended, with the price close to $1,011 and moving averages significantly lower at around $743. The daily RSI is also approaching 80, indicating overbought territory. While this raises the risk of a correction, it does not automatically end the rally.
