Zcash Tests 25-Second Blocks in NU7 Upgrade on Testnet
Zcash has launched its NU7 protocol upgrade on the testnet, marking a significant step toward a November 5 mainnet deployment. The upgrade, activated at testnet block 4,465,026, introduces 25-second blocks, a major reduction from the current timing. Developers will use the testnet results to decide on October 20 whether the upgrade is ready for the main network.
NU7 also includes changes to transaction fee distribution, with 40% going to miners and 60% reserved for future rewards. This adjustment aims to balance incentives within the Zcash ecosystem. However, the upgrade poses a risk for holders of legacy Sprout funds, who must move their ZEC before activation or lose access to those funds.
The upcoming mainnet rollout on November 5 carries a deadline for these Sprout holders, emphasizing the importance of timely action. The testnet phase will help identify any issues before the final implementation, ensuring a smoother transition for the Zcash network.
