Zuckerberg Rebuts Calls for AI Slowdown, Cites Lab Liability and Trust
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has pushed back against growing calls for AI companies to slow down development. In a recent post on X, he argued that every lab already has the responsibility and incentive to move at a safe pace.
Zuckerberg's comments came in response to an essay published by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei last month, which urged companies to ease their AI development pace. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, xAI CEO Elon Musk, and Google DeepMind chair Demis Hassabis agreed with Amodei's position.
Zuckerberg countered that labs face real liability if their models cause harm, giving them a built-in reason to be careful. He emphasized the importance of trust and alignment in AI development, saying they are becoming key features that will separate models from each other.
Meta is also working to reduce its dependence on outside chipmakers by developing its own AI chips. The company is currently testing its third-generation in-house AI chip, known as the MTIA 450 or Arke, and plans to bring it into its data centers in the first half of next year. A fourth-generation chip, called Astrid, is also in development.
