$170M in Maine Goods Face Canadian Tariffs as Trade War Escalates
U.S. Senator Susan Collins has warned that approximately $170 million in Maine goods will be subject to Canada's retaliatory tariffs set to take effect on September 8, 2026.
The forest products sector will bear the brunt of the impact, with about $105 million or roughly 62% of the total affected. This industry is foundational to Maine's economy, supporting approximately 30,000 jobs and contributing more than $8 billion annually to the state's gross domestic product.
Collins urged the Trump administration to resume negotiations with Canada to prevent what she called 'unnecessary economic harm' to Maine workers, employers, and communities. She noted that two of Maine's paper mills have already contacted her about the crushing increased costs they will incur due to the tariffs.
