$40 Trillion Debt Crisis: Warren Buffett's Plan to Fix America's Fiscal Nightmare
The US has reached a debt milestone of $40 trillion, surpassing 120% of its GDP. This rapid growth in debt accumulation is a significant concern, with the country doubling its debt from $20 trillion to $40 trillion in just under a decade.
The cost of financing this debt is another critical issue. The US no longer has the 'exorbitant privilege' of countries adding US dollar reserves without question. As a result, investors are now price-sensitive and demanding higher premiums to lend money to the government.
Warren Buffett has suggested a solution to address the debt crisis: pass a law that makes sitting members of Congress ineligible for reelection if the budget isn't balanced. He proposes changing the 3% GDP deficit target to 'any time the budget isn’t balanced' and requiring cost-cutting measures rather than tax increases.
The current system incentivizes bad outcomes, with politicians more interested in passing the buck and blaming others rather than taking action to address the debt. To change this, Congress must be held accountable for its actions, and incentives must be aligned with outcomes that benefit Americans rather than politicians themselves.
