$5 Note Redesign Hits New Milestone with 'Connection to Country' Theme
The Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) project to redesign the $5 note has reached a new milestone. After choosing 'Connection to Country' as the theme from over 2,100 public submissions in 2025, artists will now create artwork based on this theme.
The chosen theme is significant, as it represents an enduring relationship between people and place in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. This connection encompasses land, waters, sky, relationships, knowledge, responsibilities, and identity.
The RBA has set up an Imagery Selection Panel to guide the project, comprising RBA officials, Note Printing Australia representatives, and prominent First Nations community members. The panel's role is crucial in ensuring that the design is both culturally meaningful and secure, practical, and accessible.
