$95 Million Economic Boost: Kelowna's 'Year of Sport' Initiative Succeeds
The city of Kelowna in British Columbia, Canada, has reported a significant economic boost from its 'Year of Sport' initiative, which generated almost $95 million in economic activity. The five major sporting events hosted by the city in 2026 attracted visitors who supported local businesses, increasing tourism and exposure for Kelowna.
The events included Touchdown Kelowna, which featured two B.C. Lions regular-season CFL football games and a week-long accompanying festival that drew sold-out crowds of 17,500 fans per game. The city estimates the event generated $72.2 million in direct and indirect business sales through increased tourism.
The Memorial Cup, held from May 21-31, brought an estimated $15 million in economic impact, while the B.C. Summer Games, which took place from July 22 to 26, raised a preliminary estimated figure of $2 million. The city anticipates an estimated $3 million economic impact from Skate Canada International, an international figure skating competition scheduled for October 30-November 1.
According to the city report, major events benefit the city by attracting visitors who support local businesses and increase positive exposure for Kelowna. The success of hosting these events demonstrates the value of having a co-ordinated major event portfolio, which contributes substantially to the local economy through increased visitation, tourism spending, business activity, and enhanced economic opportunities.
