Afghanistan's Food Prices Resist Dollar Rate Decline
Despite a recent decline in the dollar's exchange rate in Afghanistan's markets, food prices have not yet come down. In recent days, one US dollar has been trading at about 64.3 Afghanis, a slight decrease from the fluctuating rates of 65-66 Afghanis seen in early September.
While some people had hoped that the drop in the dollar's value against the afghani would lead to cheaper imported goods, market data shows that prices for essential items like rice, oil, flour, and sugar have not changed significantly. Sellers attribute this to previous purchases and import contracts made at higher exchange rates.
Economic experts warn that Afghanistan's heavy reliance on food imports means exchange-rate fluctuations have a direct effect on prices. However, they note that the transmission of this impact usually takes several weeks.
