AI a 'Critical Component' of Bank Security Measures
Federal Reserve Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman sounded the alarm about the dual-edged sword of artificial intelligence, which poses both benefits and threats to bank security.
In a speech at the Community Bank Cyber Workshop in Denver, Colorado, Bowman noted that AI has accelerated vulnerability identification and created sophisticated social engineering campaigns. It has also lowered the barrier to entry for cybercriminals and enabled them to adapt attacks in real-time.
However, Bowman emphasized that robust cyber hygiene is crucial to protecting against these risks. This includes up-to-date asset inventories, phishing-resistant multifactor authentication, sturdy identity and access controls, and strong vulnerability identification and patch management programs.
Bowman also highlighted the importance of AI as a defensive tool in bolstering bank security measures. She acknowledged that preparing for such threats can be burdensome and challenging for community lenders, but emphasized the need for proactive risk management.
