AI-Driven Cybersecurity Threats Require Global Cooperation
The Bank of England's governor, Andrew Bailey, has warned that AI could amplify cyber shocks across the global financial system. This warning was followed by a review from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) finding that AI can uncover vulnerabilities faster than financial firms can fix them.
According to George Osborne, MD and Head of OpenAI for Countries, this is an international challenge that requires governments, financial institutions, cyber security companies, and AI labs to work together. He believes that governments and the private sector will rise to the challenge if they act early and as one.
Osborne, who was UK Chancellor in the aftermath of the crisis, emphasizes the importance of building resilience in advance. He created the FCA during his tenure and put the Bank of England in overall charge of financial stability. Now, OpenAI's goal is to keep defenders ahead of attackers with leading-edge cyber models.
The FCA review found that spotting vulnerabilities with AI is not enough; institutions must be able to prioritize those vulnerabilities, patch the most serious cases quickly, and verify that the fixes work.
